Sharon Fogaren Santos
Sharon Fogaren Santos, the co-host of the "J.R. and Sharon" morning radio show on FUN 107, is in a Boston hospital after being rushed from her home in Rochester on Thursday. As of Monday evening, she was still having tests to see what happened, according to her on-air partner, J.R. Reitz "She was pretty critical when she was admitted but she has made some progress," he said. "Her boyfriend dialed 911. They had a very quick response and they took her to Boston. As far as I know, they are trying to figure out what happened." The Rochester police log indicates an ambulance call came in at 4:49 a.m. Thursday.
Fogaren Santos, who is in her early 40s, appeared to be in excellent health, Reitz said. "Sharon took good care of herself and, apart from an episode with kidney stones that we talked about on the air, she hasn't had any medical issues that I'm aware of." The station on Monday morning informed listeners of the situation for the first time. "Sharon had taken three days' vacation and wasn't expected back until today," Reitz said Monday. "We wanted to respect the family's privacy because Sharon is a very private person." On Monday, the station posted a brief announcement on its Web site indicating that the morning show personality had suffered "a serious medical incident" and opened space for listeners to post messages of encouragement.
"It's been hard," Reitz said. "It was a great shock to everyone at the station and to the listeners, but the outpouring of support has been very nice." A native of New Bedford, Massachusetts Sharon graduated with honors from Bridgewater State College with a degree in Speech Communication and a concentration in radio and television production. Her broadcasting career began at WPEP-AM in Taunton.Sharon has worked in radio in Boston, MA, Providence, RI and Orlando, Florida.
