Kevin Skinner took the top prize in the Simon Cowell produced America’s Got Talent finale tonight. He wins a million dollars and a headlining gig in Las Vegas. I kinda stopped paying attention to this show about halfway through its run, but I do remember Kevin’s audition, and I wasn’t impressed with his country warbling. Was he really the most talented of the finalists? Peeps who’ve been watching, please, that can’t possibly be true. I just listened to his final performance, “I Don’t Want To Miss a Thing”, and holy crap, that was NOT good. To say the least. Sharon Osbourne compared Kevin to Johnny Cash and Lou Reed? Please. Kill me NOW. Susan Boyle performed her first single the Rolling Stone’s “Wild Horses” from her upcoming album. And that was very stiff and unimpressive. She shouted her way through the song without displaying any emotional range or phrasing. And the crowd kept applauding…what? Oh, the applause sign, most likely.
He beat an opera singer from Houston, a recycled-instrument percussion group from New Hampshire, the Texas Tenors and the singing siblings Voices of Glory. And though his victory was almost upstaged by the American debut of another talent-show phenom, Susan Boyle, singing "chicken catcher" and farmer Kevin Skinner of Mayfield, Kentucky, triumphed on Wednesday to take the top prize on the fourth season of "America's Got Talent." After winning the $1 million top prize, the unassuming, guitar-strumming Skinner said he was looking forward to his new headlining gig in the "America's Got Talent" variety show in Las Vegas in October, hosted by the show's former host, Jerry Springer. "I want to go out there and give 'em the best show I can," he told current host Nick Cannon. "I've always loved to perform," a misty-eyed Skinner, 35, said after beating out opera singer Barbara Padilla with his stirring rendition of Aerosmith's "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing" on Monday's performance show.
