Samoan islands location
Samoan islands location tsunami 2009. A tsunami may have killed as many as 120 in Samoa and American Samoa islands, officials said late Tuesday. At least 26 are confirmed dead in Samoa and 19 casualties were reported in nearby American Samoa after a tsunami waves struck the islands, US homeland security official Mike Sala said. Waves were reported five feet to 15 feet above sea level, prompting warning across the Pacific to the Western United States, from southern California up to Oregon-Washington border. US President Barack Obama declared a 'major disaster' in American Samoa, the White House said in a statement, and the US government is preparing to send emergency aid to the region within the next 24 hours. The killer tsunami was triggered by a massive 8.1 magnitude earthquake about 122 miles southwest of the Samoa island.
As a blogger not allowed to link to AP stories without paying big bucks, you will have to google this title “Tsunami hits American Samoa” to get the facts of the tsunami that has hit Samoa in which an entire village has been wiped out. No fatalities have been reported as of yet. Meanwhile, back at the ranch, the NWS Pacific Tsunami Warning Center at Ewa Beach, Hawaii is reporting the Hawaiian Islands are under a Tsunami Watch with expected arrival time of 1:11pm Hawaiian time. I will keep you updated on this post as more details are reported by Hawaii Civil Defense, and/or the big a** cruise ship sitting in the bay goes back out to sea unexpectedly, (my money is on the cruise ship). A tsunami warning was issued for New Zealand and other small Pacific islands after a major 7.9 magnitude quake struck in the ocean off American Samoa, U.S. government agencies said on Tuesday.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, a branch of the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, issued the warning after the quake hit about 120 miles southwest of the remote Pacific island of American Samoa. It struck at a depth of 20.5 miles. A tsunami watch was in effect for Hawaii, Papua New Guinea and other small Pacific islands. The agency noted that its warning did not mean a tsunami had necessarily been generated by the quake. The warning was issued because a quake of this magnitude had the power to generate a destructive tsunami, it said. My prayers are with you and your family, hope all the islands are spared and damage.
