The Lakers’ Kobe Bryant and the Suns’ Shaquille O’Neal combined for 44 points to lead the West to a 146-119 victory over the East. The duo’s performance rekindled memories of when Bryant and O’Neal were teammates for three NBA titles with the Lakers in the early part of this decade. O’Neal has since been traded to the Miami Heat, where he won a championship in 2006, and to the Suns.
Former Piston Chauncey Billups scored five points in 18 minutes for the West. The West broke it open in the third quarter after taking a 72-67 lead at halftime. O’Neal was dominant in the quarter with 11 points, and the got the crowd going when he executed the give-and-go with Hornets guard Chris Paul. The novelty was that Paul was in the low post and hit a cutting O’Neal for the dunk. As usual, the game was all show as O’Neal got the party started with a dance routine before the game.
