Allegheny Power reported more than 46,000 customers remaining without power early Thursday. Westmoreland County was hardest hit with more than 14,000 still in the dark, down from 22,000 late Wednesday night. Allegheny Power said that the high winds that began late Wednesday had damaged its poles, lines, and equipment. Allegheny Power’s Web site said that at the height of the power outages, 200,000 customers were in the dark in the utility’s four-state service area. Allegheny Power spokesman Mark Nitowski said that in Washington County, about 400 customers were without power at 8:30 a.m. Thursday.
Berkeley County in West Virginia was the hardest hit area in the region, with 5,300 customers without power this morning. In Morgan County, W.Va., 1,500 customers were without electricity and 14 customers in Jefferson County did not have power at 8:30 a.m. Also this morning, about 66,000 West Virginia customers were still without power, even though electricity has been restored to 50,000 in that state, Nitowski said.
