John Busby, a former Falmouth police officer shot as he drove to work nearly 30 years ago, will air at 10 p.m. Saturday on CBS "48 Hours Mystery." The Busby story launches a three-part "tales of survival" series for the network show called "Live to Tell," producer Liza Finley said. Melvin Reine, a local trash hauler now institutionalized in Taunton State Hospital, is the man suspected, but never charged, in the 1979 Busby ambush.
John Busby was never able to prove who shot him, but suspected it was an alleged criminal in Falmouth, Mass., who had ties to the local police department. One shot blew off part of his lower jaw, forcing him to go through multiple reconstructive surgeries and extensive physical therapy to learn how to talk again.
John Busby lived in this seaside resort town with his family while they worked to rebuild their lives. Busby, a former police officer in Falmouth, Mass., had been shot in the face years before while driving to work in the Cape Cod town and was worried that whoever did it still wanted him dead. Now, after having recently written a memoir with his daughter about what happened to them in the years immediately after the 1979 shooting, Busby is telling his story on national television. Busby and his daughter, Cylin Busby, are expected to appear on the CBS program “48 Hours Mystery” at 10 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 14.
