John Busby

John Busby, a former Falmouth police officer shot as he drove to work nearly 30 years ago, will air at 10 p.m. Saturday on CBS "48 Hours Mystery." The Busby story launches a three-part "tales of survival" series for the network show called "Live to Tell," producer Liza Finley said. Melvin Reine, a local trash hauler now institutionalized in Taunton State Hospital, is the man suspected, but never charged, in the 1979 Busby ambush.
John Busby was never able to prove who shot him, but suspected it was an alleged criminal in Falmouth, Mass., who had ties to the local police department. One shot blew off part of his lower jaw, forcing him to go through multiple reconstructive surgeries and extensive physical therapy to learn how to talk again.
John Busby lived in this seaside resort town with his family while they worked to rebuild their lives. Busby, a former police officer in Falmouth, Mass., had been shot in the face years before while driving to work in the Cape Cod town and was worried that whoever did it still wanted him dead. Now, after having recently written a memoir with his daughter about what happened to them in the years immediately after the 1979 shooting, Busby is telling his story on national television. Busby and his daughter, Cylin Busby, are expected to appear on the CBS program “48 Hours Mystery” at 10 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 14.

Melvin Reine

Melvin Reine, was behind the attempt on his life and that the would-be killer would not stop until Busby and his family were all dead. Determined to exact his revenge and protect his wife and children, Busby overcame harrowing odds and survived the shooting. On Feb. 21, the story of two college students who were on a peaceful date when they were stalked, kidnapped, brutalized, pushed to the edge of a river and shot in the face. But these teens outsmarted their would-be killer, playing dead to stay alive and tell their story.
Reine struck fear in the residents and police of Cape Cod long before the shooting. A convicted arsonist, Reine was suspected of murdering three people, but continued to walk free. As time went on, the Busbys realized that Reine’s power over the town would never cease and that he would never be brought to justice. Practically forced to leave the town, the Busbys went on the run, living in fear, changing their appearance and never divulging their past.
On Feb. 28, the final story in the series will focus on a family whose decision to sail the world takes a life threatening turn when they hit a reef. With her husband pinned under a fallen mast, a mother must choose between saving her husband or four children. It is an unbelievable yet true tale of physical and emotional rescue. Over the years, the family moved six times until, in 2003, the unexpected happened. It is a story of a horrific crime and the long-awaited justice that no one could predict.
