Ennis House

Ennis House, a Los Feliz hilltop masterpiece composed of patterned and smooth concrete blocks that has been mightily threatened by man and Mother Nature, is being offered for sale at $15 million by the private foundation that has been restoring iFrank Lloyd Wright's iconic Ennis House in Los Feliz is being put up for sale. The nonprofit foundation with title to the house figures private ownership might save the troubled home from itself.
Long Beach Unified School District board member Michael Ellis missed a key vote Tuesday -- his 14th in less than three years. Ellis' absentee rate is nearly three times that of the entire board. Long L.A. taxpayers shell out $1.5 million for phone service for 8,000 unused numbers owned by county government. L.A. L.A. Unified School District chief Ramon Cortines says that even deeper cuts in school budgets, including more teacher layoffs, will be needed if the district doesn't receive more state funds or revenue from a proposed parcel tax. Eric Lloyd Wright, the architect's grandson and a member of the nonprofit Ennis House Foundation's board, said that, given harsh economic realities, private ownership would be the best way to save the house and honor his grandfather's intentions. Torrential rains had caused a retaining wall to buckle in March 2005, sending several patterned blocks tumbling down the hill. City inspectors briefly red-tagged the estate, spread on half an acre along a ridge with breathtaking views in the Hollywood Hills.
