Detroit News

Detroit Tigers for the first time in four years when the teams wrap up a three-game set today at Yankee Stadium. On Saturday, CC Sabathia tossed seven shutout innings as the Yankees held on to post a 2-1 victory over Detroit. Alex Rodriguez had a solo homer and Melky Cabrera singled in the eventual game-deciding run for the Yankees, who posted a 5-3 victory in the opener of this series on Friday and are one win away from sweeping Detroit for the first time since May 24-26, 2005.
Sabathia (9-6) allowed five hits and walked three, but held the Tigers scoreless in his start. He also struck out four. Alfredo Aceves gave up a run in the eighth inning, but Mariano Rivera threw a perfect ninth to record his 25th save this season. "That's huge. CC was very big for us today," Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira said. "All we needed was CC to come up big for us today and he did."
Justin Verlander (10-5) got the loss despite giving up only two runs in a seven-inning start for Detroit. He allowed seven hits, walked one and fanned six. Marcus Thames went 2-for-4 with a homer for the Tigers, who have lost three of their last four and saw their lead atop the American League Central cut to 1 1/2 games over Chicago. The right-hander made his last start on July 10, when he limited Cleveland to just one earned run and four hits over seven innings of a 5-1 triumph. He struck out four in picking up his first win since June 6.
