Phoenix" will portray the fiery death and rebirth of the mythological bird using reds, gold, oranges and even darkness. "It's probably one of the most beautiful choral ballads we've done, where the bird takes flight again," Bettner said. He said Richmond is making a strong return from band camp this past week. "The kids have had an absolute blast with it," Bettner said. "We've had a wonderful time putting the show together. It's been a great run so far."
Band captain Sam Rogan, a senior, said, "I think it's going to be an amazing show from how well everybody's working. (We have) a lot of new members. I think it's helping us that they're learning stuff early and they're excited about the show." Rogan admires the show's general effect: "How everything lines up -- the music, the drill, the color guard."
While winning isn't everything, Rogan admits that Richmond's second-place finish in 2008 -- just points away from first -- is in the back of students' minds. "Mainly, we're thinking about the show, how well we will do," Rogan said. "We look at it as a surprise. Whatever we get placement-wise, we're happy with. "We're working a lot harder than we used to. It's a really good thing. All of the staff members are just amazing. ... Fans are amazing. The parents help, they're always there.
